The Routine is a graphic narrative made in response to Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s 1961 novella No One Writes to the Colonel. This work is featured in a collaborative publishing project from the Reader Elective at the Royal College of Art, alongside fourteen other visual communicator’s work.
My response recontextualises themes and ideas from the 1950s Colombian setting of the text, relating them to a present-day setting with present-day concerns. By creating a repetitive, sequential graphic narrative where many images are constantly redrawn, the work emphasises feelings of monotony and routine. As a supplement alongside the graphic narrative, I also created a fictitious sanction letter from the story, which also features in the collaborative publication.
